Victory Medals

Series of works by artist Vo Tran Chau

Vo Tran Chau‘s statement

This series recreates and enlarges victory medals using used fabrics and clothing. The medals contain black-and-white images of hunting scenes—animals killed for trophies such as heads or skins. These images contrast with colorful flowers and animals flying freely, shown in surreal proportions.

Soft textiles are used to represent hard metal objects, highlighting contradictions and inequalities in society. The recycled clothes also reference the hidden realities of fast fashion: exploitation, poor working conditions, and environmental pollution caused by dyes and textile waste, often in developing countries.

The works reflect on cruelty presented as entertainment and on the human desire for victory and recognition. By adding flowers, leaves, and animals in flight, the artist softens the harsh imagery and invites viewers to reflect on their relationship with other living beings.

Each piece is made using traditional hand embroidery and fabric patching. The very small details require patience and careful labor, emphasizing both the value of handwork and the time embedded in the work.

For me, historical images of hunting, killing, and victory also carry feelings of savagery and shame. I place fresh flowers, leaves, and animals flying freely into these scenes to soften the harshness. As a visual artist, I see myself as an observer and storyteller. I invite viewers to experience these images slowly and reflect—not only on the past, but also on their own lives today. Are we chasing personal desires in ways that harm other living beings? I believe that when people reflect on themselves, they can act with greater care and beauty.
