Can Van An

1993 Born in Hanoi, Vietnam

An’s work shows subtle dry wit, an underground sense of irony and often teases authority and establishment. His work invites questions about the perception of reality, with visual challenges and hidden surprises. Inspired by contradictions and conceptual pairings, he views his subjects not only through observation but through memory and recollection. He visually investigates the relationships between form and shadow, considering the opposites of trust and distrust, and the differences between youth and maturity, new and old, past and present, and reflects upon the corresponding societal values.

An graduated from the Vietnam University of Fine Arts in Hanoi and has been practicing as a professional artist since graduation, working in a variety of mediums spanning traditional painting, silk painting, and lacquer. He has participated in a variety of group exhibitions: the ASEAN Art Exhibition at the Young Asian Artists Festival at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza, Seoul, Korea 2017, the Biennale Exhibition at Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Art 2017, Limited and Infinite 2016 and Utopia Land 2017 at Heritage Space, Hanoi.
